The first flag of the Confederate States of America, called the Stars and Bars, flew from 1861 to 1865. It was flown during the Civil War when 11 states — Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Texas — seceded from the United States of America to uphold the practice of slavery. The flag gained prominence during the civil rights movement from 1954 to 1968.
